This a reviewed version of one of my old essays. Please comment.

How was it all taken away from me? My family. My friends. My whole life was destroyed just because of one wave. Now all that was left was rubble and the memories of what I once had. None of us expected anything like this to happen. It was just an ordinary day here in the village…

“Ahmed! Ahmed! Wake up!” my dad shouted. It was my dad trying to wake me up. As usual I was fast asleep in my bed. It was Sunday morning and I had been out fishing with my friends the night before. We would most times go out at eleven in the night and sneak back into our houses early the next morning. The only drawback to the fun we had was that the next day, every single one of us would feel “half dead”.

“Ahmed! Ahmed! Wake up! The Gods have finally blessed us!” Even though I was tired, the last sentence had caught my attention. I quickly sprung out of my bed, got changed and dashed out to where my father was. What I say next shocked me. The whole beach was littered with fish! Around six to eight men where already there at the beach picking up the fish and putting them into baskets. “Come on Ahmed! Come help me pick up the fish!” My father was holding a basket full of fish. “What happened Bapa?” “Son, the gods have blessed us. They have sent fish from the havens for us. They have answered our prayers.”

We spent another few minutes picking up the fish before we headed back to the house. We had collected two baskets full of fish. Enough to last us six months! But most of it would be sold at the local market so that we could use the money and buy other food supplies. It was turning out to be a fantastic day. Fish coming from the havens. What could be next?

My father had given me the task of gutting and separating the fish for it to be sold in the market. I was still doing the mundane task thirty minutes after. I was getting tired of seeing the insides of fish and was about to stop when something else strange happened. Sounds of animals rang out throughout the village. Dogs where barking, birds where chirping and almost every single animal looked like it had gone mad. The bigger animals where already breaking out of their enclosures. It was havoc in the village, as though a curse had been passed over it.

Then, I suddenly heard a loud booming sound coming from the shore. People started screaming and I could hear the sounds of buildings slowly starting to crumble. I dashed outside the house to see what was happening. When I got out, I could see that almost half the village was being destroyed by a large amount of water which was devouring everything. It seemed as though the sea was on a mission to destroy everything in its patch and it knew nothing could stop its destructive powers. When my parents came out, they where as shocked as me. I guess we where spared because our house was located on one of the low hills in the village. I started to hear another wave and when I turned to the sea, I saw a wave rushing towards us. I could tell that even our home would not be protected by this wave. My parents and I started running.

We where aiming to get to the hills on the other side of the village. I am sure the waters can’t reach us there. As we ran, I could hear the cries of people crying out for help as they drowned underneath the water and rubble. The damage the waves had made was incredible. Even the more modern homes in the village had been reduced to rubble.

“Bapa!” My father had fallen into the water and he was trapped between the rubble. My mom was on the other side trying to help him but there was not much she could do. I was in the best position to help him. I started running towards him. When I got there and tried to help him he said this:

“ Son, don’t try and save me. My body is old and worn out. The times have finally caught up with me. I don’t want you dieing too because of me. Save your mom. Look after her. Cherish her and love her as I have. I will always be a part of you. If the gods have chosen for this to happen to me then I shall accept it. I have been always been looking out for you and I will continue from the heavens if the gods allow me.”

“But dad, I cant jus..”

“Go son. Go!” my father shouted at me.

I was torn between helping my dad and saving myself. The question “what should I do?” kept on repeating itself in my head. I decided to run. I ran as fast I could, trying not to look back and regretting what I had done.

I eventually made it up to the hill. The waves had stopped by the time I had got up but the flooding continued on for days. By then rescue teams had already arrived and had carried us inland to neighboring villages. When everything was over, I had gone back to my village to look for my parents. Walking through the village, tears started running down my face. “There is no way anyone is still alive after this.” Some of the rescue officers had said “No point in trying to find anyone.”

I went back to where my house was located. Part of my house was still standing so I when in, sat down on the floor and started crying. Why. Why do these things have to happen? What is wrong with the gods?
Why…?
